What is the Importance of Regular Eye Exams?

Many eye conditions have little or no early symptoms, and half of all cases of blindness or severe vision loss can be prevented with timely detection and treatment. An annual comprehensive eye exam is one of the simplest and most effective steps you can take to protect your vision and your overall health.

In addition to identifying vision changes, our exams can detect early signs of retinal tears, which, if caught early, can often be treated before they cause permanent damage. Your eye health can also reveal signs of systemic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cardiovascular issues, making annual exams an important part of your total wellness plan.

By undergoing a thorough eye exam every year by our physicians you can stay on top of your eye health and stop any problems in their tracks before they become worse.

What are the Different Types of Eye Exams?

At Simon Eye, our optometrists practice at the highest level of their license—providing full-scope eye care that goes far beyond basic exams and prescriptions. Unlike retail optical chains, our ODs diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of eye diseases, perform advanced screenings, and coordinate seamlessly with ophthalmologists to ensure complete care for every patient.

Here at Simon Eye, we specialize in the following types of eye exams:

Specific Eye Condition Screenings During Your Eye Exam

Our comprehensive exams include crucial screenings for common conditions:

Glaucoma:

  • This involves checking your intraocular pressure and examining the optic nerve for signs of damage. Early detection of glaucoma is vital to managing this condition, which can lead to irreversible vision loss.

Cataracts:

  • Our optometrists look for any cloudiness of the eye’s natural lens, which indicates the presence of cataracts. Catching cataracts early allows time to monitor and set up a treatment plan.

Macular Degeneration:

  • We examine your macula, the central part of your retina, for early signs of macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss.

Dry Eye Disease:

  • We assess the quality and quantity of your tears to diagnose and provide solutions for dry eye, a common and often uncomfortable condition.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?

During a dilated, comprehensive exam, we will begin by gathering health and family history to determine if you are at a higher risk for any eye conditions, and:

  • Screen any issues that could lead to blindness or vision problems.
  • Test your vision skills.
  • Determine your need for eyeglasses or contact lenses, or update your prescription.
  • Check your eyelid health and function, the anterior segment in the eye (the area in front of the lens, including the cornea and iris), and the interior and back of the eye.
  • Test the coordination of your eye muscles, pupil responses to light, side (peripheral) vision, intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye).
