| Preventative Eye Care
Yearly eye examinations are recommended for most children and adults to monitor the changes that may occur in the eye and surrounding structures. The damage from most eye diseases is preventable if discovered and treated early in their process. In adults these include diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma, cataracts and damage caused by medication. In children, changes in vision occur quickly. Learning in school can be compromised if children have blurred vision in school. Those of us who work on computers have additional demands to our visual system. Those demands can results in fatigue, eye strain, and sometimes headaches. Small adjustments in one’s prescription can alleviate this stress in many cases.

| Comprehensive Eye Exams
Calculating the correct contact lens and glasses prescription is an important function of our work and is often mistaken as the whole eye examination. However, it is only one of approximately 21 points of a comprehensive eye examination. An eye examination starts with a though history including any part eye conditions and injuries. Knowledge of your general health, medical history and medicines that you may be taking is also important as the eye is affected by conditions of the body. Our doctors are highly trained to examine, diagnose and treat conditions of the eye related to diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorder, lupus multiple sclerosis and arthritis to mention a few. Our doctors also check for the presence of any signs of glaucoma (damage due to increased pressure in the eye), cataracts (a clouding of the eye), muscle imbalance and any one of a number of retina problems.
Once your examination is complete you can be assured that all possibilities have been covered. This is the reason annual exams are so important. So even though your eyesight seems good to you it is important to have your eyes checked for signs of any disease that may be present.

| Treatment of Eye Disease
Our doctors at Simon Eye Associates are highly trained in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. The most common eye disease seen in our office would be a form of eye infection, commonly called “pink eye”. Pink eye is actually a viral infection of the eye and only one of several reasons for a red eye. Others include allergy, bacterial infection, fungal infection, chemical reaction or foreign bodies. Our doctors are trained in determining the exact kind of condition so it can then be treated with the correct medicine or therapy.
Other forms of eye disease that are treated commonly by our doctors include glaucoma, iritis (an inflammation of the eye with pain and light sensitivity), dry eye, cataracts (which are not actually a disease but more an aging conditions), trauma, and many more. The only thing we do not perform is surgery which is only necessary in a very few individuals. However, when our patients do require surgery we can refer them to one of a number of qualified surgeons in the area.

|
| Surgical Co-Management
Although very few patients actually need surgery we have developed a close relationship with several of the area experts. When a patient has a problem with the anterior (front) part of the eye that our doctors feel requires surgery or consultation, we refer them to a corneal specialist. When a patient requires cataract surgery we refer to a cataract surgeon and likewise when a patient requires retinal surgery (back of the eye) we refer them to a retinal surgeon.

|
| Emergency Eye Care
Our doctors are on call 24 hours a day and are trained to treat emergencies requiring immediate attention. Foreign bodies embedded in the eye (dirt, wood, metal, finger nail, etc.), scratches of the eye, flashes and floaters commonly seen as “cob webs”, red eyes and common eye infections are considered emergencies.

|
| Laser Vision Correction
Our doctors have undergone extensive training in the co-management of laser vision correction. Laser vision correction is a procedure that corrects for nearsightedness (inability to see objects in the distance) with the Eximer Laser. The laser procedure lasts only a few minutes and is performed in one of our affiliate laser centers.
The patient would first be seen by one of our doctors for a preliminary examination. At that time, you would be evaluated to determine if you are qualified for a lase correction. If you decide to have the procedure done additional tests would be performed and a summary of these results would be sent to the surgeon who will perform the procedure. After the procedure you would return to your doctors at Simon Eye Associates and post-operative care would commence. Depending on the initial prescription you would notice visual improvement the next day or weeks.

|
| Low Vision
This is a condition of the eye where someone’s best corrected acuity is diminished to a level where it becomes a deterrent to performing daily tasks. In other words, when the individual is wearing their updated glasses they still cannot see well enough to do such things as drive, write, read, sew or perform daily tasks. This is usually due to some underlying eye disease that is already known to the individual. By using special optical aids that help to magnify the print or object the individual can then read or perform their desired task. These appliances are specially designed to each individual.
